I love spring. It’s my favourite time of year. Not that you’d know spring had arrived yet in the UK as, after a short warm and sunny spell last week, we still have chilly days and some strong winds. But, all that aside, the garden seems to be springing (ha) to life.
One of the best things about this time of year are the colourful displays in the garden. Not only bulbs I remember planting, and those lovely little spring shrubby flowers, but a few surprises, too. I don’t know how they get here, but every year there seems to be something I don’t remember planting or seeing before, obviously courtesy of the birds dropping seeds? Or seeds flying about on the wind? I’m not sure, but I’m very happy to welcome most of the new things in the garden. And the best things is they always seem to plant themselves in exactly the place where I would have put them. Spooky.
For instance, this beautiful flowering shrub/tree arrived a couple of years ago. It sprung up right where we can see it from the kitchen window, and we love it. Don’t know what it is, but it’s so pretty.
This year I’ve noticed some lovely ground geraniums popping up in a space by the window, so again when they flower we’ll have a good view from the living room. Of course, Ms. Vivvy had to investigate this new arrival to check out if it’s edible or just for show. She wasn’t especially pleased when she discovered it was the latter.
As spring morphs into summer I’ll be keeping a check to see what other new delights await. What about you? Any flowers ever arrived in your outside space that surprised and delighted you?
Lovely, uplifting piece Trish just like Spring! Your garden must feel like a magical, mystery tour at moment. I know what you mean about surprise plants we’ve found a couple and wondered if they are from the birds. Today though I saw the magic of nature – bluebells. Peter diverted from food shopping run to surprise me, a carpet of bluebells in a wood near here. It was amazing. Felt wonderful. See you soon.
Ah bluebells, a real sign of spring. Hope you’re enjoying this fabulous weather!
I’m not a huge lover of the color yellow, except at the beginning of spring. Our daffodils and forsythia herald the change to a new season and they make me smile. When we first moved into our house (in April many years ago) I wanted daffodils. So we found some little guys that had been forced to bloom late and planted them so I had my yellow. And they are the first things that bloom every year now and my favorite spring flowers. 🙂 Enjoy yours. The garden looks lovely. Hello to Miss Vivvy!
Not a great fan of yellow either, Laurie, but like you I adore daffodils. Had planned to cut some forsythia to bring inside this spring but time ran away with me and it was soon gone. Ms Vivvy says hi, and a high five to Dude!
Like Jane said, a very uplifting blog this morning. Especially, like you, after since such a wet cold start to spring. Got home last night and was surprised at the garden in just the two weeks I was gone. The lilacs are blooming as well as bunch of other things. I need to get out and cut some for the house.
Ooh, lilacs. How lovely. What a lovely welcome home gift. It never ceases to amaze me how fast the garden grows when you get home after a trip away. It’s always great to walk around and see what’s sprung up in your absence. Enjoy.
Lovely post, Tricia. Spring is such a lovely time of year, just such a pity it’s been so cold and wet! And yes, love the little surprises the pop up in the garden. Always find they are more exciting than those we plant. Hope the phlox are thriving for you. 🙂
Agreed, especially when they pop up in exactly the right place! Yes, the phlox are indeed thriving, especially in this burst of gorgeous weather. Hope you’re enjoying your garden too.
