Last month, I talked about our annual family winter cabin adventure. One of the things I forgot to mention is that we painted rocks. A while back, in my walks at a local park, I began seeing painted rocks in various places. I spoke with a nice lady who’d been searching out rocks. She said there’s a whole movement to paint and hide rocks. Like geocaching, but without the posting of finds. In fact, Tacoma even has a Facebook page dedicated to painting rocks
So I bought some paints and my daughter and I painted a few rocks when we were at their house for a visit. She, then, brought a whole bunch of rocks to our winter cabin. Almost everyone painted at least one rock.
We talked as we painted. Worried over grandkids spilling paint. Reached over each other for a certain color. And laughed and cheered at our creations. I am bummed I didn’t take pictures of everyone’s rocks there. We have some talented painters. And some innovative and imaginative grandchildren.
But I do have pictures of what I painted. I’m not Renoir, and these feel like clumsy attempts at art, but they make me smile. The one with blades of grass and round flowers in the upper corner was done by one of my granddaughters. The rest are mine.
Basic, I know. But I rarely indulge in free-form art, so this was a huge step for me. 🙂 The rock I’m most proud of is one I solicited my college-age granddaughter’s guidance on. I wanted a water-scape. She suggested finding a watercolor picture online as a guide, then she told me in what order to paint things.
Turned out pretty good, I think, for a two-inch tall rock. 🙂 I’m pretty happy with it. And while I’ll probably drop the other ones off different places to give someone a smile, this one will stay on my desk and be my reminder of the joys in my life.

What Fun! Lots of good memories and joy for those who find your previous rocks. Great idea!
Hi, Barb! Thanks. While it may not be something I do regularly (I angsted over that last rock) it was so much fun to give it a try. Kind of calming, too.
What could be better?
Oh My Gosh, love it and what a great way to enjoy the kids and grand kids. Another memory making in the works as I can see future rock painting events.
It was pretty awesome. And I tried not to worry about what might get through the newspapers to the table. Nothing did, thank goodness.
What a fun thing to do. Love your waterscape and fully understand why you don’t want to part with it. Hope we see more in future. 🙂
Thanks, Kit. No where near your level of artistry, but it was fun!
I love them, Laurie. We have that movement here, too but I haven’t painted any. Yours look great. FUN! Jillian
Thanks, Jillian. It was fun, and I recommend it. I also recently tried a Paint and Sip, but that really stressed me out. Painting an entire picture in two hours. Yikes! Not sure I’ll go back to that.
I’ve done the painting thing twice – was not relaxing to me at all. 🙂
What a lovely thing to do and to share with your family, Laurie. I’m impressed by your attempts and the painted rock you have chosen to keep on your desk will be like a lucky talisman as well as a reminder of very happy times.
Thanks, Tricia. I do glance regularly at my rock. It makes me smile, even on the toughest of days. 🙂
I love these Laurie and a great reminder of your time together as well as momentos to cherish. My mother used to make jewellery from stones which she tumbled for hours to smooth out. Great blog thank you.
